The Mechanical Melanie

Press 1 to talk to nobody, press 2 to talk to nobody again, or press 3 to return to the first nobody.
As a Pay as you Go subscriber with Rogers Mobility, the other day I had purchased some $40.00 worth of airtime for my mobile phone which I use as both my home and business number. Having almost depleted my airtime, I was anxious to top up my balance as I was awaiting a few important calls. After dialling the required *611 which is primarily used for obtaining your account balance or toping your airtime, I was greeted with the standard mechanical message, `Welcome to Rogers, my name Melanie’ followed by the numerous options available.

‘To add money to your account, please press one’, which I promptly obeyed. This was followed by Melanie asking for a 10 digit wireless number, which at this point had me totally confused as I had never been asked for this number with my previous experiences in topping up my account. Usually you are asked for your four digit pin number to verify your account information. Having thought I had made an error in dialling, I hung up and went through the process once more receiving the same response from the mechanical Melanie. This time however, I decided to stay with Melanie awhile longer in hopes of her being able to direct me to a ‘real person’, all to no avail. After listening to the numerous options which seem to lead me nowhere, I was becoming quite frustrated with the whole simple process and decided to turn to the web for support remembering that I had topped up my account previously this way.

Once I was able to find the page where one would normally sign in, I was further frustrated upon finding that the whole process of signing in to the website was becoming nothing more than a pain. After several unsuccessful attempts to login and becoming a little `pissed’ at the whole ordeal, I decided to call Rogers directly. To my surprise, there was Melanie again, although this time she did have a few more options which I was forced to listen to before returning me to the main menu to start all over again. Having about exhausted my patience at this point, I decided to call their support number and after listening to Melanie yet again, I was more than relieved to finally be able to get through to some real person. I quickly explained my situation to the technical representative and was somewhat relieved to be talking to someone other than Melanie. As the representative was about to direct me to someone who would be able to help me update my account… my phone when dead. I had exhausted the few remaining minutes I had talking to the mechanical Melanie… Now I was ‘PISSED’…

Needless to say, I had by then just about given up. The mechanical Melanie had tried my patience and won. After attempting a few more calls on the mechanical merry-go-round, not to mention the endless minutes I was forced to hold, it was time to admit defeat. Two to three hours after my first attempt, I was still unable to update my account with the forty dollars I had purchased previously in the day. I called Rogers again for the final time, and after waiting for some time was told that they were experiencing difficulties with their wireless network and that it should return to normal within the hour. After offering to credit my account with ten dollars for my hardships which I promptly refused, only wanting the use of my phone returned, I hung up more than a little ‘pissed’ with the whole ordeal. For the next few hours when I dialled *611 I was greeted with the message… ‘Welcome to Rogers… We’re sorry we are experiencing technical difficulties and are unable to update your account at this time. Please check back later!’

Just why is it they did not play this mechanical message the moment they discovered a problem with their network? And why is it these days that the consumer is always put on hold or left talking to the mechanical Melanie. As one should have noticed, this mechanical madness is becoming more and more of a norm with all big corporations who are more than willing not to answer any of our questions or concerns yet have no problems digging deep into our pockets.

My wish is that the next time one of these big corporations’ calls looking to collect on their account they may hear the same mechanical message… ‘Welcome, if you’re looking for payment Press 1, If you need assistance… go back to the main menu’.

I Am Canadian...

"When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us".  ~ Alexander Graham Bell
For those of us that are, or consider ourselves truly Canadian, I'm sure it's a question we ponder time and time again at some point in our lives. Just what are these values we have held so dear for so many years and why is it we now find them to be eroding away?
At the young age of 47, and as a recently separated father of two, I have much to be 'pissed' about! The feeling of having lost my place in this great country of ours has been years in the making. However, in this day and age I feel as if I am not alone. What brings us to this point is not always clear, yet I sense that more and more Canadian’s like myself are finding much to be 'pissed' about. One only has to pick up the local newspaper, watch or listen to the local TV and radio stations to know what it feels like to be 'pissed'. A great many of us feel it at election time, showing it by refusing to vote. (Not good if we want or expect change!) A lot of us feel it on the job as much of our pay is quickly swallowed up in taxes or worse yet, we are replaced by lower wage earners as companies try to compete and survive n a global market. We feel it at the pumps... at the grocers... in the malls and in the schools. No matter where we may look we can always find something to be 'pissed' about.

What's got me so 'pissed'? Well, currently there are a number of reasons, but first and foremost is something that started a few years back. What took me years in the making was more or less stolen from me if for nothing more than greed. A couple of years back I had worked hard in my free time to develop an informational website pertaining to Canada. After taking a few years to develop and complete this site fully, this non-profit site was to give people a better understanding of Canada. Filled with historical information on the land and its people, it was my intention to share this site with those who may never have the chance to experience the kind of life we as Canadians take for granted. It was also to be a starting point for those new to Canada, visiting or otherwise, to find the information needed to make the best of their time here. The site itself contained some 450 pages of Canadian content, with well over 5000+ external links to other great Canadian content.

Originally hosted in the US, it was my intention to move the site to a local hosting company within Canada. I searched for a new domain name, Trulycanadian.ca, and found that it was available. I then contacted a few local web hosting service providers inquiring about their webhosting packages and the cost associated with such plans. Having had a conversation with someone from Webnames.ca located in British Columbia to which I voluntarily gave statistical information about the site, I hoped that I had now found a new home for my website. Awaiting feedback from a few other providers I had contacted, I told the gentleman at Webnames.ca that I would contact him within a few days with regards to the hosting package and the registration of my intended domain. Two days later when I had went to register the Trulycanadian.ca domain; I found that it had been purchased by Webnames.ca, intent on resale. Yeah… I was ‘pissed’ to say the least! I quickly researched on the CIRA website on how to dispute domain names in question, and found that it could become quite costly, leaving me little choice but to wait and hope that Webnames.ca may relinquish their hold on my intended domain. Well, it’s been a number of years since, and the domain Trulycanadian.ca is still undeveloped awaiting resale.

So ‘pissed’ is a way of saying it mildly… My intentions for this new site are not quite clear just as yet; however it will give me the opportunity to once again continue my work. My old website, “Yzowl’s Truly Canadian Links and Information” will find a home while I continue work to refine and develop it further. With regards to the ‘Truly Pissed Canadian’ website, my hopes are to be able to share here what really “pisses” us off! As the blog develops further, I hope to be able to bring you live comments and stories from other Canadians and speak more with you about what makes Canadians ‘pissed’! Perhaps one voice can make a difference…

"Canada... A Nation of Bigots?"

Posted by Derek J.Sowa | Posted in | Posted on 1:30 AM

"He who will not reason, is a bigot; he who cannot is a fool; and he who dares not, is a slave". ~ William Drummond

An article in Maclean’s Magazine asks “Are we becoming a nation of bigots?” If like me, you are bothered by the onset of immigration to this country of ours, I’d have to say yes, we are becoming a nation of bigots. And for very good reasons.

A few months back In Quebec, Claude Bazinet, a former Bell Canada employee who grew up in Montreal spoke out at Quebec’s hearings on “reasonable accommodations”. The hearings, a travelling commission chaired by two academics attempts to gauge the province’s feelings on immigrants and Quebec society. The hearings called into action last February over the town of Hérouxville’s infamous bylaws, some of which outlawed stoning and female circumcision. “We receive them here, we feed them, we house them, we give them an education, and they don’t integrate at all” says Bazinet. “What do they do to accommodate? Nothing.”

In Rimouski, Micheline Bélanger used his turn to speak at the hearings. “When I’m in Montreal, I don’t feel at home when I see these veiled women on Côte-des-Neiges and Côte-St- Catherine.” I feel like I’m in Saudi Arabia, and I shouldn’t. This is my country” he exclaims. Retiree Aimé was in St Jerome to denounce what he saw as an overrepresentation of kosher items in his local grocery store. “When I eat, I want quality, not the benediction of a rabbi.

Comments like these are coming with much more frequency these days, and not only in Quebec. In Vancouver, über-manager Bruce Allen, who will be co-producing the opening and closing ceremonies of the Vancouver Olympics, declared “Canada has rules.” “If you’re immigrating to this country and don’t like the rules that are in place, then you have the right to choose not to live here. If immigrants don’t like it, we don’t need you here”. In Mississauga an Islamic high school was vandalized twice in August. The Abraar School in Ottawa was torched on the first day of Ramadan. In Calgary in September, three potential jurors in a murder trial of an alleged Muslim hit man were excused after they admitted they may be biased against the accused because of his religion.

The issue behind the incendiary comments seems to resolve around the question of “reasonable accommodations” of cultural and religious minorities, and just where the limits should be drawn. When asked in a recent SES poll on reasonable accommodations conducted for the Institute for Research on Public Policy, “Is it reasonable to accommodate religious and cultural minorities?” a mere 18 per cent said yes. On asking how many thought immigrants should adapt fully to culture in Canada, the response was 53 per cent. When it came to accommodating religious and cultural minorities in public places, such as schools, hospitals and government buildings, 37 per cent said there should be no accommodation at all, 6 per cent advocating full accommodation. As for accommodation in the workplace, 45 per cent said there should be none, while only 4 percent agreeing with full accommodation. The poll further reveals that just 24 percent of those with a university education saw accommodation as reasonable, while 50 percent said immigrants should integrate.

It seems that Canada’s middle class is the least at ease with the idea of accommodation. Roughly 64 per cent of those earning between $40,000 and $49,000 believe it is up to immigrants to fully adapt to Canadian culture. Another countrywide poll from the Association of Canadian Studies suggests Canadians believe conflict between Christians and Muslims will eventually overshadow the country’s long-standing quarrel between the English and French. I for one am inclined to agree.

So, I ask… Just how much of our Canadian culture and customs are we willing to accommodate? Should we as Canadians do more to accommodate immigrants, or should they accommodate us? My answer would be the latter of course. Having lived quite a number of years in Brampton, one of the biggest multicultural cities in Ontario where Muslims are quite dominate, I believe we have become way too accommodating with regards to immigration. I have seen the adverse effects of a community overrun by domineering Muslims as they take over our schools, our streets, our communities and our jobs. Between 1991 and 2001, Canada’s Muslim population has doubled, making Islam the fifth biggest religious faith in the country, and the second biggest in every major Canadian city except Vancouver.

On the whole, it would seem that we (or should I say our fearless leaders), have bent over backwards to accommodate new immigrants and to what loss? How much of our Canadian values and culture do we have to accommodate to these new immigrants and what will be the outcome? Are we now seen as bigots and racist because we want to hold on to our Canadian values and culture? I often wonder just how accommodating as Canadians we would find, if it were us living in the Muslim world.

Out From The Clouds - An Introduction

Posted by Derek J.Sowa | Posted in | Posted on 12:42 PM

"And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years." ~ Abraham Lincoln

In this world we can find ample opportunities to become enraged. One only has to open their eyes and step out from behind the clouds to see life and all of it's atrocities in it's true form. Yet even though we may open our eyes and try to comprehend the immeasurable amount of atrocities being committed on a daily basis through out the world, we feel compelled to ignore the obvious. Have we as human beings so become distant that we allow these atrocities to continue? Or have we really become so powerless as to put a stop to it?

For myself, having lived through many years of  tyranny and deceit, I admit I have much to be "pissed" about. (My innocence lost by the knowledge and wisdom I have gained in nearly half a century.) I wonder why is it our laws of the land seem to apply twofold giving the tyrants a free rein to continue to commit these heinous crimes against all of humanity? When will we rise up put and end to it, or is all hope now gone? Who are these tyrants and their conspirators? To what purpose and to what end will they continue their relentless pursuit? Who now is going to protect the innocent? After living most of my life desperately seeking clarification to many of these disturbing facts, I find myself still striving to find the answers. Where do we look and who now can we believe?

As wars rage on around the globe, it is the innocent who are left to suffer. As famine and natural destruction continue across many continents, the innocent suffer. As tyrannical leaders command great nations, the innocent suffer. Why is it that in a world as vast and diverse as the one we live, having such an abundance of wealth and resources that we share, it is the innocent who are made to suffer? Who are these people who have claimed all this wealth and resources only for themselves, leaving millions of people young and old from all walks of life abandoned and alone to suffer in silence, while they alone bask in what does not rightfully belong to them? It is questions such as these, that upon knowing the answer, make me "pissed" to say it politely.

Hence, came the name for my blog. My writing here will not be from standing behind the clouds, merely from what I would refer to as "out from the clouds". It will be truthful, honest, and may be respectful. My rants and raves will cover everything that leaves me feeling a little "pissed", while trying at times to add some humor. Unlike most other media who's self serving purpose is to assist the tyrants in deceiving all those who would believe that the atrocities being committed around the world are for the benefit of mankind. Perhaps we only need to shed more light on today's atrocities to make people more aware of the world around them. It is my hope that someday, people will stop hiding behind the clouds, open their eyes and help to protect the innocent who have been abandoned for so long. For the future of all mankind, we need to act. For if we can not see, perhaps then we have lost our way!
